LEEK TEAM MOTHER'S UNION
The Leek Team branch of the Mothers' Union began over 15
years ago. The aim was to provide an opportunity for ladies who worked
during the daytime to meet during the evening. Originally the branch met
in the home of one of our members.
In more recent years, the branch has been meeting at St
Luke's Church on the third Monday in each month, starting at 7.45 pm.
There is a varied programme throughout the year of Bible study, visiting
speakers, and craft evenings, all of which follow the theme set by Mary
Sumner House.
All members of the Mothers' Union, male or female, are
welcome from within the Leek & Meerbrook Team and we are always happy to
welcome new faces.
If you would like to know more about the work of the
Mothers' Union, or would like to come along and join in one of our
meetings, please contact the Leek Team Branch Leader, Ann Alexander on
01538-382368 or e-mail ann.alexander@voisd.com

Our bereavement support group was set up some years ago, with a view to
giving pastoral support to bereaved families. We are not counsellors, our aim is
to befriend a grieving person, by offering support and being along side them in
their pain and to be sensitive to their needs. Maybe they just want someone to
sit and listen as they unburden themselves. (In listening the bereavement
visitor can pick up how the grieving person is coping and if more professional
counselling is needed.)
Twice a year a special memorial service is held for those who have lost a
loved one in the previous 6 months.
On the first anniversary of the death a prayer card is sent to the bereaved
family, to show we have not forgotten them and they will be mentioned in our
prayers during that week.
We find our pastoral services given to the bereaved is very much appreciated.

DORCAS CLUB Meets every other
Thursday in St Luke's Church Centre from 8.00 till 10.00 pm. This group of
ladies has been meeting some 42 years and came together and were originally
known as the "Young Wives Group". Over the years it has met at different times
and in various venues, but many of its members have remained faithful to the
group, and in all the hard work the group continues to do. At their fortnightly
meetings they have varied speakers, activities, go on trips together, and share
meals. A twice yearly Coffee Morning and Bring & Buy is always extremely well
attended and supported. Whilst their role has always been one of friendship,
they have throughout their years together given many thousands of pounds to
local charities through fund raising efforts. Organisations such as Leek
Moorlands Hospital, Springfields Road Special School, Kidney Research, Air
Ambulance, Macmillan Cancer Care, Horton Lodge Special School, and the Donna
Louise Trust are to name but a few. It is true to say that whilst "young wives"
are perhaps now not so young, but that has not diminished what they have
achieved and they show no sign of giving up their valuable work. For more
information contact Mavis Bailey through the Church Office.
